Nõiakull ehk öökull

Öökull olla nõid-naisterahvast sündinud. Nõid-naisterahvas moondanud mune varastama minnes enese alati linnuks. Kui kord lihavõtte ajal inimesed munadega läinud kirikusse, ilmunud nõid sinnagi munavargusele. Õpetaja neednud vargust nähes nõia öökulliks. Sellest ajast peale on öökull maailmas olemas

Vanarahvas uskus, et öökull ennustab õnnetust, kui akna ligidal lendab. Öökulli petmine tähendab paha! Kui öökull huikab, saab pulmi, kui nutab, — matuseid!

Owl aka witch owl

According to Estonian folklore owl has been created by a witch. Which had always transformed herself into a bird, when stealing eggs. At Easter people came to church, which eggs and the witch wanted to steal these eggs. The priest saw the theft and cursed the bird it an owl. That was the way an owl was created.

In the past, people believed that if an owl approaches the window, it is a sign of disaster. Cheating an owl means bad. When an owl hoots, a wedding will come soon, when an owl cries, there will be a funeral.
